About me
Hi, My name is Benny Tyas and I have just enrolled on the BAPP Arts programme with Middlesex University. I completed my Level 6 Professional Musical Theatre Studies at the Hammond School after 7 years of being part of Birmingham Royal Ballet Associates. With this great foundation, i managed to progress to working with Headliners Theatre Company as a lead Vocalist on their cruise ship, Oriana. After this, i moved to Germany, where i began work as a Swing in Mamma Mia. I remember thinking i would only stay in Germany for the one contract but three years later, i am still here. I have enjoyed working with many different styles of theatre here in Germany, such as Stadt theatre. The translation into English is ´City Theatre´ and this involves creating a piece from scratch with original ideas.
What I am most grateful about from my career so far is the range of characters and different genre musicals i have been a apart of. From a young naive gang member ´Big Deal´ in West Side Story to the sassy, latino ´Mercedes´ in La cage aux folles, the chance to portray and become these characters is a great passion of mine. Already from reading others blogs and getting stuck in with module one tasks , i feel i have broken down my job and looked at areas i enjoy, i don't enjoy, and i need to work on. The Reflective side of module one has already shown to be a great tool in developing as a performer. I look forward to learning more about myself, others and the great industry I am proud to be a part of.
I had a few reasons for doing the course. Firstly, it was something i had on my ´to do list´ since leaving college as i knew i had worked so hard for three years but didn't have the satisfaction of having a degree status as my qualification.
Through meeting performers who had been in the business longer, i gained a real understanding that because of the uncertainty of if or when you will get a job, a greater and wider interest in the field throughout your career as a foundation is a really great thing to have. Therefore, further studies, courses in which greater your job chance and capability are a Real survival tool for performers.
I was not the biggest fan of school and the learning environment. We all know how hard it is to motivate and learn something we are not good at or have zero interest in. But now i am older and understand the importance of learning and knowledge, i see this as a great opportunity in order to practise my learning and studying skills in a subject i am so passionate about.
